Semaglutide

Semaglutide acts on GLP-1 receptors. When blood glucose is high, it helps increase insulin release and reduce glucagon, a hormone that raises glucose. It also slows stomach emptying. For weight management, semaglutide reduces calorie intake through effects on appetite. These actions help explain its uses, but do not predict an individual result. ^{1, 2}

The Wegovy label includes tablets and injections for adult weight management in specified populations, alongside nutrition and physical activity. Both routes also have a cardiovascular risk-reduction indication for certain adults. Injection labeling includes adolescent weight management and a specified liver-disease indication; those uses do not automatically extend to tablets. ¹

Ask which indication applies to you and which formulation your clinician is considering. A familiar brand name is not a shortcut around checking eligibility. Keep the current medication guide with your prescription, especially if the product, device or instructions change.

Ozempic injection is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes, including specific cardiovascular and kidney risk-reduction uses. Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets share an oral prescribing document with diabetes and cardiovascular indications. FDA does not review a compounded preparation for safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing. Semaglutide products carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents; whether this occurs in humans is unknown. They are contraindicated with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, and with serious hypersensitivity to the relevant product. ^{1, 2, 3}

Discuss pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, severe stomach-emptying problems, eye disease and other diabetes medicines. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can contribute to dehydration. Bring pregnancy plans, breastfeeding and any procedure involving anesthesia into the conversation before treatment decisions are made.
