Spironolactone questions, answered

Spironolactone is not for anyone who is pregnant or trying to become pregnant, or who has high potassium, Addison's disease or serious kidney disease. Tell your clinician about potassium supplements, salt substitutes and blood pressure or heart medicines, which can raise potassium further. It is not for anyone taking eplerenone. Your clinician reviews your full health history and every medicine you take before prescribing.

Spironolactone blocks androgen receptors and lowers androgen production. Androgens can shrink hair follicles in female pattern hair loss, so blocking them can slow thinning. Spironolactone commonly causes more frequent urination, dizziness, breast tenderness and irregular periods. It can raise potassium, so your clinician may check your blood. Get help right away for muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat. Your care team is there if anything comes up.
