Finasteride is for men only. Anyone who is or may become pregnant should not take it or handle crushed or broken pills, because it can harm a male baby. Tell your physician about liver disease, prostate problems or any history of depression. Your physician reviews your full health history and every medicine you take before prescribing.

Finasteride blocks 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that turns testosterone into DHT. DHT shrinks hair follicles in male pattern hair loss, so lowering it can slow thinning and help some men regrow hair. It usually takes three months or more of daily use to see a change. Finasteride can lower sex drive, cause trouble getting an erection and reduce the amount of semen. Breast tenderness or swelling can occur. Depression and thoughts of self harm have been reported, so tell your physician right away if your mood changes. Sexual side effects have continued after stopping in some men. It may slightly raise the risk of a serious form of prostate cancer, and it lowers PSA test results, so tell any doctor who checks your prostate. Your care team is there if anything comes up.
