You cannot establish a compounded medication’s identity or safety from appearance alone. Verify the dispensing pharmacy’s license, confirm the prescription and full formulation, and ask what quality testing applies to the finished preparation. 1, 2, 3, 4
An authentic pharmacy contact, a complete label, and clear instructions are basic checks. A seller’s certificate does not replace those checks or establish that the vial received matches the tested sample.
Compounded drugs are not FDA approved. Testing can address selected quality questions but cannot turn a preparation into an approved product or guarantee no harm.
Which label details should I check?
Check your name, pharmacy, medication and ingredients, strength, directions, storage conditions, and beyond-use date. Ask the pharmacy about anything missing or different from your prescription.
What should I ask about testing?
Ask whether results concern raw ingredients or the finished preparation, which batch they cover, and what identity, potency, sterility, or other tests were performed as applicable. Avoid reducing quality to one purity number.
