Are Wegovy and Ozempic approved for the same conditions?

No. Wegovy and Ozempic do not have identical approved indications, and their formulations matter. Wegovy includes weight-management uses. Ozempic products are labeled around type 2 diabetes and specified risk-reduction uses, with differences between tablets and injections. 1, 2, 3

Both brands include semaglutide, but that does not make their products interchangeable. The exact indication, device, strength, and administration instructions must be checked.

Wegovy injection has weight-management, specified cardiovascular-risk, and specified MASH indications. Ozempic injection has type 2 diabetes, specified cardiovascular-risk, and specified kidney-risk indications. Their tablet labels differ again, so the formulation must be named.

Does losing weight on a diabetes drug make it a weight-management approval?

No. An observed effect is different from a labeled indication. A clinician may discuss off-label prescribing, but that should not be described as FDA approval for the use.

Can my pharmacy simply switch the brands?

Any change needs an appropriate prescription and product-specific instructions. Insurance coverage, clinical suitability, and medication availability are separate questions.

Ask which exact product is being prescribed and for what condition. Ingredient overlap does not erase label differences.
